Certificate of Competence in Radiation Protection
"Radiation Protection in Interventional Pain Therapy (SSIPM)" – the independent continuing education program that replaces the previous radiation protection component of the IDSP.
An independent certificate of competence since July 2023
The Federal Radiation Protection Ordinance has been comprehensively revised. This made it necessary to adapt the continuing education programs in the field of radiation protection. Previously, radiation protection was integrated into the continuing education program "Interventional Pain Therapy (SSIPM)".
Following a unanimous decision by the SIWF Board, all radiation protection content will henceforth be transferred to an independent certificate of competence. Our program is also affected by this, as the originally planned Appendix 3 had been missing for several years and the wording in Section 3.3 no longer complied with current requirements.
Analogous to 17 existing radiation protection competence programs, a separate certificate of competence "Radiation Protection in Interventional Pain Therapy (SSIPM)" has now also been created for interventional pain medicine.
The new continuing education program has been in place since July 2023.
Transitional Provisions
Anyone who has completed the previous interdisciplinary focus "Interventional Pain Therapy (SSIPM)" as well as the radiation protection expert course recognized by the FOPH will receive the new certificate of competence without additional requirements.
Other Certificates of Competence in Radiation Protection
For specialists whose specialist title already includes radiation protection, no additional certificate of competence is required. This applies to:
- Surgery
- Neurosurgery
- Physical Medicine and
- Rehabilitation
- Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Musculoskeletal System

Documentation of Radiation Protection Competencies
General knowledge relating to radiation protection is tested in the final examination of the FOPH-recognized radiation protection expert course (MA5 – Type B).
The subject-specific practical radiation protection competencies are documented in the logbook form for the certificate of competence as "fulfilled" or "not fulfilled".
